From Advent to Epiphany
If you’re like me, with a liturgical background rooted in the church calendar, you notice that we are now celebrating or observing the time of the Epiphany. What’s that you say?
Epiphany: The word epiphany simply means “manifestation,” and the holiday Epiphany (or Three Kings’ Day) is meant to commemorate the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, as represented by the magi. As recorded in Matthew 2, the magi did not come to the manger, but to a house (verse 11) where the holy family was staying. According to one tradition, the magi showed up on “the twelfth day of Christmas,” or twelve days after Jesus’ birth. Of course, this is one tradition regarding the magi, out of two or three, that I am aware of. You can Google the topic and sort it out to your heart’s satisfaction.
For the Reformed Baptist tribe, our typical response is to bristle at anything that comes close to “high” church affectations. Whether it’s organs, bells or smells (incense, for the un-initiated), or liturgical calendars. We have a tendency to turn our noses up and stomp out of the room when such things are mentioned. Unless, of course, it’s served up alongside some cheesy potatoes, sweet tea, and a big slice of whipped cream covered Epiphany for dessert.
Now that I’ve got your attention, let me ask you this question, and I expect the truth in response. With the passing of Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and the Lions historic win this past Sunday, what has been foremost on your mind? Me too
!
It wasn’t until this morning’s devotion, that mentioned Epiphany, that I actually had EPIPHANY! So, there are two things of value here that you can take from the three minutes you have spent reading this. First, have a good devotion that will keep you in the Word and on track between now and Easter. Second, pray for the Lions… I mean, pray that the good Lord will continue to reveal himself to each one of us so that we will always be ready to give a defense of our end zone…I mean, our faith, and to share the gospel with all those whom God has drafted to be on his team.
Yours in Christ
