A Good Night’s Sleep

I was newly married and still a student. While it was true of me that I had not completed my education, it could not be said that I was stupid. I cleverly married Jacquelynne on the eve of HER college graduation. She not only had a job offer before she took her diploma but was working one week after our wedding and already being groomed for the Head Nurse position on her floor at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. My parents were greatly relieved. I think that they always considered it inevitable that someone would have to support me. At least for the short run, they had “dodged the bullet”.
I am a few months older than my wife. In that particular year it meant that I could vote in the presidential election, and she could not. The major party candidates were Richard Nixon and John Kennedy. If The Lord tarries His return until November 5, we will have been married for 16 presidential election cycles (some of my readers will need pencil and paper – others will just ask their cell phones). Jackie is old enough to vote now.
Over the years The Lord has prospered us such that we have been able to pay all of our kid’s undergraduate tuition costs. I remember writing checks that made my eyes bleed. It was small comfort then to remember that OUR tuition cost for my excellent Big-10 schooling was only $116 per quarter. My recollection is that the fees also included student seats for all of the home football games. I obtain a certain smug satisfaction from recalling that a marriage license in 1960 cost a mere $2. I offer this last factoid in demonstration that my only real success as an investor came early, but very successfully!
A brief excursus: I have checked this out and during my student days, MSU did not lose a single game to Michigan.
I remember having fears related to that first election. I have had occasion to repeat that angst many times since. From the perspective of my now 85 years, I consider that all of the anxiety was needless. The Lord will do as He desires. Every atom in the universe is aligned just so at any nano-second in time according to His ordination. The One who keeps me does not slumber nor sleep (Psa. 121:4). Everything that He does is holy, just and good (Rom. 7:12). He works all things together for my wellbeing (Rom. 8:28). It seems, then, that I have lain awake many nights needlessly. Had I been better informed or had more faith, I might have realized that there was really no sense in BOTH of us being awake.
I believe that I am correct in stating that I am the oldest living male member of Berean. I have seen a lot of things in my lifetime. Yet, I have never witnessed the Lord be unfaithful to His Word. As the young folk are wont to observe, “He has this”. His children may, therefore, enjoy a good night’s rest.
