God’s Word: Warning and Comfort
13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it. (KJV) -Ps 10:13
We live in a world where men do not actually mean all that they say. We have come to know this and are often left perplexed not being sure how much of what was said was intended to be believed. We make a great mistake when we are persuaded that God is like us in this way. “Heaven and earth will pass away,” That is certain because God said it. Just as sure is the conclusion of Matthew 24:35 which says, “but my words shall not pass away”. In our verse, the wicked are revealed to have contempt for God. This reviling is rooted in the belief that God will not hold His creatures to account. He may be mocked. He will not honor His word.
And so, their souls whisper peace as they pull the night covers about themselves. Each good thing received of God is perverted to the hardening of the unrepentant heart. They will tear these barns down and build new ones. Tomorrow will bring fresh blessings from a God who will not visit in wrath. Oh, simple fool! Get you up and upon thy knees. The storm is coming. There is no place of safety from His all-consuming judgment!
Saint of God, surrender yourself to the watch-care of Christ as evening approaches. His complaint against you is hidden under His blood. Your account is settled. He has paid it all. The death angel will pass over you. You will stand at the great assize justified and clothed in His righteousness.
Let the world close the day with a false peace. Christ has purchased a quiet for us that the world cannot know. This is our comfort because His word says that it is so.
